Language Learning in Intercultural Perspective addresses the ways in which language learning is related to learning about other cultures and to acquiring an ability to communicate across cultural frontiers. It argues that language learners need to develop sensitivity to cultural difference and its impact on communication, and to acquire the skills of discovering and interpreting other cultures, other values, beliefs and behaviours which lie beneath the surface of cross-cultural communication. Contributors show how drama can be used to develop cultural awareness and how learners can acquire ethnographic skills to help them investigate and understand socio-cultural aspects of language which play an important role in second language acquisition. The contributors are all respected educationalists from a range of countries and different cultural contexts.

Foreign and second language teaching should prepare learners to use a language with fluency and accuracy, and also to speak with people who have different cultural identities, social values and behaviours. This text aims to define precisely what competencies are required, how these can be included in teachers' objectives and methods, and how the ability to communicate across cultural differences can be assessed.

Tyt. grzb.: Informed teaching.
Bibliogr. przy pracach.
The following volume presents a collection of chapters pertaining to English studies. The transversal theme for all of them is the pedagogical issue of informed teaching. In this volume the reader will find results of research and reflection of academic researchers and practitioners which may implicitly or explicity inspire language teachers to improve school practices by presenting insights into language teaching related areas. The book is divided into four main areas. Part one focuses on communication related issues and discusses the development of work-related competences. Part two of the volume is devoted to intercultural issues in foreign language pedagogy. Part three contains ruminations on creativity and reflectivity at school. Part four of the volume encompasses ideas lying at the crossroads of linguistics and literature.

This publication revolves around one main issue, which is how human beings transfer their thought and experiences from life to texts. This volume is divided into three different sections, the first one dealing with literature and cultural topics, the second including essays about intercultural studies, and the third centered on language learning analyses inspired by the narrative approach. The book is grounded on the idea that language, literature, and culture should never be studied in isolation, no matter how specialized each of these has become in the last century. On the contrary, a holistic, even eclectic approach that would connect different humanistic studies in a coherent and cohesive discourse has much to offer. The articles in this publication, therefore, provide an interesting interconnected dialogue along these three different lines.

Communicating across cultures / Stella Ting-Toomey. - New York : Guilford Press, c1999. - XVII, 310 pages. : illustrations ; 23 cm.
(The Guilford communication series)
Includes bibliographical references (p. 277-300) and index.
From high-level business negotiations to casual conversations among friends, every interpersonal interaction is shaped by cultural norms and expectations. Seldom is this more clearly brought to light than in encounters between people from different cultural backgrounds, when dissimilar communication practices may lead to frustration and misunderstanding. This thought-provoking text presents a new framework for understanding the impact of culture on communication and for helping students build intercultural communication competence. With illustrative examples from around the globe, the book shows that verbal and nonverbal communication involves much more than transmitting a particular message—it also reflects each participant's self-image, group identifications and values, and privacy and relational needs. Readers learn to move effectively and appropriately through a wide range of transcultural situations by combining culture-specific knowledge with mindful listening and communication skills. Throughout, helpful tables and charts and easy-to-follow guidelines for putting concepts into practice enhance the book's utility for students.
