The discovery technique is a method of teaching in which students are not directly presented with a target grammatical structure or rule. The temptation to plagiarize is hard to resist. It is a pleasure to read this book, and if the term "food for thought" were ever well applied, it would be to this book. Because of its inter-disciplinary approach and ground-breaking nature, this book should be read by anyone in fields remotely connected to language and culture--not just teachers mainly concerned with applying insights to the classroom. Language teaching is often dumbed-down and reduced to a matter of simply applying the currently-accepted methodology; Kramsch has revealed that language teaching can be (and should be) an intellectual endeavour. The Natural Approach is based on the following tenets: 1). Language acquisition (an unconscious process developed through using language meaningfully) is different from language learning (consciously learning or discovering rules about a language) and language acquisition is the only way competence in a second language occurs. (The acquisition/learning hypothesis) 2). Conscious learning operates only as a monitor or editor that checks or repairs the output of what has been acquired. (The monitor hypothesis) 3). Grammatical structures are acquired in a predictable order and it does little good to try to learn them in another order.(The natural order hypothesis). 4). People acquire language best from messages that are just slightly beyond their current competence. (The input hypothesis) 5). The learner's emotional state can act as a filter that impedes or blocks input necessary to acquisition. (The affective filter hypothesis).

The following volume presents a collection of chapters pertaining to English studies. The transversal theme for all of them is the pedagogical issue of informed teaching. In this volume the reader will find results of research and reflection of academic researchers and practitioners which may implicitly or explicity inspire language teachers to improve school practices by presenting insights into language teaching related areas. The book is divided into four main areas. Part one focuses on communication related issues and discusses the development of work-related competences. Part two of the volume is devoted to intercultural issues in foreign language pedagogy. Part three contains ruminations on creativity and reflectivity at school. Part four of the volume encompasses ideas lying at the crossroads of linguistics and literature.

This 1981 book is a general introduction to linguistics and the study of language, intended particularly for beginning students and readers with no previous knowledge or training in the subject. There is first a general account of the nature of language and of the aims, methods and basic principles of linguistic theory. John Lyons then introduces in turn each of the main sub-fields of linguistics: the sounds of language, grammar, semantics, language change, psycholinguistics: the sounds of language, grammar, semantics, language change, psycholinguistics, language and culture. Throughout the book he emphasizes particularly those aspects of the discipline that seem fundamental and most likely to remain important. He stresses throughout the cultural at least as much as the biological context of human language, and shows how the linguist's concerns connect productively with those of the traditional humanities and the social sciences. Each chapter has a wide-ranging set of discussion questions and revision exercises, and extensive suggestions for further reading. The exposition is marked throughout by the author's characteristic clarity, balance and authority.
