With selections ranging from Aristophanes, Sappho and Catullus to Jonathan Swift, William Wycherley, Samuel Butler, Anais Nin and Joe Orton, this juicy, eclectic anthology of erotica celebrates the mysteries, pleasures, shortcomings and humor of sex. Benjamin Franklin's advice on taking a mistress, Alexandre Kuprin's expose of prostitution in pre-revolutionary Russia, Lisa Alther's hilarious tale of love gone awry under an automobile and Molly Parkin's oedipally charged poem about a mother raising a teenage son with raging hormones are among the serendipitous finds that share space in this collection with more familiar works from Philip Roth, Henry Miller, Andrew Marvell and Frank Harris. Pitt-Kethley, who writes a column for the British Guardian on sex in the arts, has chosen appetizing tidbits from the likes of Petronius's Satyr i con , Casanova's Memoirs and Erica Jong's Fear of Flying , but she also includes curious lore and sexy passages from Milton, Shakespeare, Defoe and other authors less immediately associated with erotic facets of human endeavor.

Dotyczą one zarówno zdrowia psychofizycznego, jak i aspektów moralnych (m.in. prostytucja, pornografia, handel żywym towarem, sekty, sponsoring), poznawczych i społecznych (oddziaływania sekt i grup wyznaniowych, przemoc i agresja w grach komputerowych, mobbing, cyberbullying, infoholizm, zakupoholizm, bigoreksja, narkotyki i dopalacze). Prace zgrupowane są w trzech częściach: patologie społeczne o charakterze globalnym, patologie społeczne w grupach społecznych oraz indywidualne patologie społeczne.

Bibliogr., indeks.
The nineetenth century was a period of striking developments, and subject to a great pressure of change. This process of change is the primary focus of the book. Organised into a series of thematic chapters, Black and MacRaild's wide-ranging text offers the reader an analysis of numerous spheres of human history: politics, empire and warfare; economy, society and population; religion and culture. The book also offers considered treatment of Scotland, Wales and Ireland, with a truly British (as opposed to English) perspective maintained throughout. With numerous illustrations, helpful explanatory tables, boxes and textual inserts, as well as a list of further reading with each chapter, "Ninteetenth Century Britain" is an excellent introductory text book for students of this most vital period in British history.

(Social Problems and Social Issues / series ed. Joel Best)
A thorough and informative study of how social panics about perceived moral dangers to children were created and maintained in the Britain of the 1980s. Jenkins (Pennsylvania State Univ.) examines the social context of changing values and political and economic climates supporting beliefs that child abuse, pedophilia, and even satanism were rampant threats to social order, to explain the panic over apparent ritual abuse of children that broke out in 1990-91... This solid, well-written contribution can be read profitably by everyone with an interest in modern British society.

(Culture Media and Identities)
This text outlines the ways in which contemporary trends - political, social and economic - give rise to public debates about policies concerned with culture. A range of theoretical issues are explored and three key arenas of contested regulation are discussed: sexuality, globalization and multiculturalism. Sexuality poses issues of control of representations, pornography and censorship. Globalization raises questions of national identity and cultural imperialism. Multiculturalism challenges existing models of cultural identity and citizenship. Through these three central cases, major contests around the public defining of culture, identity and difference are clarified.

Index s. 296-293
This book examines the treatment of violence by men against women in nineteenth-century England. Criminal law came to punish violence more systematically and severely during Victoria's reign because it was promoting a new, more pacific ideal of manliness. Yet, this apparently progressive legal development triggered strong resistance, not only from violent men but others who engaged in arguments about democracy, humanitarianism and patriarchy to establish sympathy with "men of blood."
