"Effective Reading" provides a wide variety of interesting, up-to-date reading material with challenging and motivating exercises which develop the relevant skills. All the texts are authentic and come from many different sources including contemporary British and American novels, newspapers, magazines and advertising. Each unit contains one or two reading passages, four or five skills exercises, and suggestions for further work. The Teacher's Book gives useful background information on the texts, answers to exercises and more ideas for follow-up work.

"Comprehension Connections" is a guide to developing children's ability to fully understand texts by making the comprehension process achievable, accessible, and incremental. McGregor's approach sequences stages of learning for each strategy that take students from a fun object lesson to a nuanced and lasting understanding. Her lessons build bridges between the concrete and the abstract by incorporating writing, discussion, song, art, and movement into a web of creative connections that reinforce each strategy on a variety of levels.

This accessible text provides an extensive survey of the major theories and models that influence reading instruction and research. Readers learn why theory matters in designing and implementing high-quality instruction; how to critically evaluate the assumptions and beliefs that guide their own work with students; and the benefits of approaching everyday teaching situations from multiple theoretical perspectives. Every chapter features classroom application activities and illuminating teaching vignettes. Of particular utility to graduate students, the book also addresses research applications, including descriptions of exemplary studies informed by each theoretical model.

This is a handbook for language teachers who would like to develop their own reading materials or who wish to enrich a reading course. It offers a classification and description of exercises aimed at developing different reading skills. While the book is designed primarily for teachers of English as a second language, the exercises are equally appropriate for the teaching of other foreign languages and much of the book is relevant to the teaching of first-language reading skills. The question-types range from the familiar (for example, multiple-choice and open questions) to highly original exercises which require the integration of different skills and an active, creative response from the student. It encourages teachers to introduce variety into the teaching of reading and offers them a great deal of resource material to draw on.

Reader's Choice / Sandra Silberstein, Barbara K. Dobson, Mark A. Clarke. - 5th edition - Ann Arbor : University of Michigan Press, c2008. - XXVI, 410 pages : illustrations ; 28 cm.
Includes bibliographical references.
Reader's Choice is among the world's best loved and most successful ESL/EFL textbooks for the teaching of academic skills. Based on the theory that proficient reading requires the coordination of a number of skills, this classic text recognizes that the most important of these is the reader's ability to select the proper skills or strategies to solve each reading challenge. The exercises and readings in Reader's Choice help students to become independent, efficient readers. Each carefully selected reading is accompanied by a wide variety of exercises. Skills-focused units alternate with units centering on full reading passages. Reader's Choice, Fifth Edition, preserves this proven format and popular readings while bringing new material and updates to every unit from the previous edition.
