"Verse in Irish", especially from the early and medieval periods, is felt to be the preserve of linguists and specialists, and Anglo-Irish poetry is usually seen as an adjunct to the English tradition. This anthology approaches the tradition as a whole and presents a relationship between two major bodies of poetry that reflects a shared and painful history. This selection is divided into three sections. The first section of the book begins with the earliest verse - pre-Christian poetry in Old Irish - and ends in the 14th century with the first Irish poetry to be created in the English language. The text then progresses from the 14th to the 18th centuries, presenting the age of bardic poetry, the "new" poetry in Irish that followed it, and the era of Swift and Goldsmith. The final section covers the 19th and 20th centuries, from the beggar-poet Raifteiri and his English-language contemporary Thomas Moore, to the works of a number of poets born around the time of Yeats' death.

Alun Lewis (1915-1944), the remarkable poet and story writer, died, aged 28, in Burma during the Second World War. Some critics see him as the last of the great Romantic poets, a twentieth century Keats. Others view him as the bridge between pre-war poets like Auden and Yeats to post-war poets such as Hughes and Gunn. He was born and raised in Depression-struck south Wales and, following degrees in history at Aberystwyth and Manchester, became a teacher there. Early in 1940, despite his pacifist inclinations he enlisted and, after long periods of training, joined the war in India.

It contains many of her best poems. Later work - devotional poems, love lyrics and descriptive pieces - extended the themes and forms of her first remarkable collection. It is remarkable, but in a quiet and intense way, not in the manner of those who seem to have learned from her among her contemporaries. Ford Madox Ford, who had a subtle ear for the unemphatic excellence of the 19th-century writers, called her "the most valuable poet that the Victorian age produced". Her modern admirers are many, especially among the poets. Philip Larkin speaks of her poetry as "unequalled for its objective expression of happiness denied and a certain unfamiliar steely stoicism". In this selection C.H. Sisson presents a wide range of her work and in his biographical and critical introduction suggests fresh perspectives on it. Sisson also includes here Rossetti's long-unavailable "Maude, A Story for Girls", which was written when she was very young and gives some indication of her cast of mind and her skills as a writer of prose fiction. The character of Maude is a severe self-portrait, wry at her own expense. As Sisson says, "with any poet the starting point, social as well as literary, is worth finding out about".
