This book was created as a summary of the full volume, Developing Literacy in Second-Language Learners, reporting the findings of the National Literacy Panel on language-minority children and youth. In this book, chapters adapted from the original report concisely review the state of knowledge on the development of literacy in language-minority children and youth, in relation to five specific themes: development of literacy in second-language learners; cross-linguistic relationship in second-language learners; sociocultural contexts and literacy development; educationg language-minority students: instruction and professional development; student assessment.

In this unique linguistics course-in-a-book, David and Yvonne Freeman explain essential linguistic concepts in a thorough, but manageable manner and show the connections between linguistic theory and classroom practice. They demonstrate that the greater a teacher's understanding of basic language structures and processes, the easier it is to make good decisions on tough topics like phonics, spelling, and grammar. They present: the basic concepts of linguistics in everyday language examples and activities that apply linguistics concepts to teaching reading, spelling, phonics, and grammar to all students, including English language learners end-of-chapter applications that link linguistic theory and classroom practice. Understand more about how language works, then use that knowledge to help your students learn. Turn prescriptive approaches into linguistic investigations. Get yourself and your students hooked on linguistics.

(Second Language Acquisition)
This book explores how complex systems theory can contribute to the understanding of classroom language learner motivation through an extended examination of one particular, situated research project. Working from the lived experience of the participants, the study describes how action research methods were used to explore the dynamic conditions operating in a foreign language classroom in Japan. The book draws attention to the highly personalised and individual, yet equally co-formed nature of classroom foreign language learning motivation and to the importance of agency and emotions in language learning. It presents an extended illustration of the applicability of complex systems theory for research design and process in SLA and its narrative approach shines light upon the evolving nature of research and role of the researcher. The study will be a valuable resource for practitioners, researchers and postgraduate students interested in classroom language teaching and learning, especially those with a focus on motivation among learners.

An understanding of sociocultural context is crucial in second language learning yet developing this awareness often poses a real challenge to the typical language learner. This book is a practical language teachers' guide that focuses on how to teach socially and culturally appropriate language for effective communication. Moving beyond a purely theoretical approach to pragmatics, the volume offers practical advice to teachers, with hands-on classroom tasks included in every chapter. Readers will be able to: * Identify possible causes of learner errors and choices in cross-cultural communication * Understand second language acquisition theories that support their classroom practices * Develop a pragmatics-focused instructional component, classroom-based assessments, and curricula * Help learners to become more strategic about their learning and performance of speech acts * Incorporate technology into their approach to teaching pragmatics This book aims to close the gap between what research in pragmatics has found and how language is generally taught today. It will be of interest to all language teachers, graduate students in language teaching and linguistics, teacher educators, and developers of materials for teaching language.
