Taken from the poverty of her parents' home in Portsmouth, Fanny Price is brought up with her rich cousins at Mansfield Park, acutely aware of her humble rank and with her cousin Edmund as her sole ally. During her uncle's absence in Antigua, the Crawford's arrive in the neighbourhood bringing with them the glamour of London life and a reckless taste for flirtation. Mansfield Park is considered Jane Austen's first mature work and, with its quiet heroine and subtle examination of social position and moral integrity, one of her most profound.

(The World's Classics)
Published in 1818, after the author's death, this novel re-affirms her belief that true love is the only acceptable basis for matrimony. Eight years ago pretty Anne Eliot was persuaded to break her engagement to impecunious Frederick Wentworth. Now he re-appears, rich and successful, and Anne is twenty-seven. In striving for their eventual reconciliation Anne must overcome many hazards, not least of which is the affection that Frederick develops for Henrietta and Louisa, two lively young charmers...

In December 1878, HMS "Bounty" sailed from Spithead to the South Seas; in April 1789 her crew mutinied in the vicinity of the Friendly Islands, and set the commander, William Bligh, and several of his companions adrift in an open boat. Sir John Barrow (1764-1848) was Permanent Secretary to the British Admiralty and the promoter of Arctic exploration and voyages of discovery. In this role, he had access to unpublished documents and to the papers of Captain Peter Heywood, a midshipman on the "Bounty" whose remarkable story he tells in full. He is able to answer two crucial questions raised by the whole incident - why the crew of the "Bounty" mutinied in the first place and how it happened that the mutiny was prompted and led by an officer. This book was first published in 1831 and has now been reissued to coincide with the bicentenary of the mutiny of the "Bounty".

The Exorcist / William Peter Blatty. - Londyn : Corgi Books, 1974. - 320 stron ; 18 cm.
Originally published in 1971, The Exorcist is now a major television series on FOX. It remains one of the most controversial novels ever written and went on to become a literary phenomenon: It spent fifty-seven weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, seventeen consecutively at number one. Inspired by a true story of a child’s demonic possession in the 1940s, William Peter Blatty created an iconic novel that focuses on Regan, the eleven-year-old daughter of a movie actress residing in Washington, D.C. A small group of overwhelmed yet determined individuals must rescue Regan from her unspeakable fate, and the drama that ensues is gripping and unfailingly terrifying.

The unique and harrowing account of the most destructive battle of the Falklands War as seen through the eyes of eight ordinary Argentinian soldiers from the seventh infantry regiment and five British paratroopers. Vincent Bramley was a Lance-Corporal and gives a unique and chilling perspective on the horrors of battle. This is a testament to those who bear the brunt of the fighting and a no-holds-barred account of what it is really like to have to do the dirty work of war, where you have to kill or be killed, and sometimes you are pushed over the edge.

Słowo kluczowe: novel horror thriller English novel
The Derry of poet Seamus Deane's first novel, "Reading in the Dark" is a perilous place. Ghosts haunt the stairwells of apartment buildings, a curse follows two families down through the generations, close friends turn out to be police informers and the police are as likely to persecute an innocent man as protect him. And hovering over all the violence, poverty and despair of 1940s Northern Ireland is the spectre of the "Troubles". The hero of the novel is an unnamed young man whose life turns upside down when a policeman frames him. Deception becomes his only means of self-defence. But the initial lie on the part of the policeman and the narrator's corresponding trickery are only part of the tangled web Deane weaves here. Early in the novel we learn that Uncle Eddie, an Irish Republican Army gunman, was blown up in the town distillery in 1922. In addition to sorting out his own problems, the narrator seeks the truth about his uncle's death.

David Copperfield / Charles Dickens. - Londyn : Penguin, [1994]. - 716 s. ; 18 cm.
(Penguin Popular Classics)
"David Copperfield" is the story of a young man’s adventures on his journey from an unhappy and impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist. Among the gloriously vivid cast of characters he encounters are his tyrannical stepfather, Mr Murdstone; his brilliant, but ultimately unworthy school-friend Steerforth; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; his nemesis, the eternally humble Uriah Heep; frivolous, enchanting Dora; and the magnificently impecunious Micawber, one of literature’s great comic creations. In David Copperfield – the novel he described as his ‘favourite child’ – Dickens drew revealingly on his own experiences to create one of his most exuberant and enduringly popular works, filled with tragedy and comedy in equal measure.

Great Expectations / Charles Dickens. - Hertfordshire : Wordsworth, 2000. - XVII, 410 s. ; 20 cm.
(Wordsworth Classics)
Considered by many to be Dickens' finest novel, "Great Expectations" traces the growth of the book's narrator, Philip Pirrip (Pip), from a boy of shallow dreams to a man with depth of character. From its famous dramatic opening on the bleak Kentish marshes, the story abounds with some of Dickens' most memorable characters. Among them are the kindly blacksmith Joe Gargery, the mysterious convict Abel Magwitch, the eccentric Miss Haversham and her beautiful ward Estella, Pip's good-hearted room-mate Herbert Pocket and the pompous Pumblechook. As Pip unravels the truth behind his own 'great expectations' in his quest to become a gentleman, the mysteries of the past and the convolutions of fate through a series of thrilling adventures serve to steer him towards maturity and his most important discovery of all - the truth about himself.

In Chancery / John Galsworthy. - Middlesex : Penguin. - 320 stron ; 18 cm.
On the surface it's the story of Soames Forsyte, the quintessential icon of the growth of the upper middle classes and the decline of the nobility during the Victorian era. Descended from a farmer in Dorset in the not-too-distant past, Soames is a lawyer and a man of property. He buys wisely, sells more wisely, and husbands his wealth and that of the family. He is in control of everything that affects him, except one thing--his wife. Desiring to possess the sensitive, beautiful, genteel but poor Irene, and with the help of a callous mother, Soames pressures Irene into becoming his wife. From this single mistake, the one time Soames let passion rule, his life and the lives of his family and their descendants are changed in unpredictable and frightening ways. Galsworthy's theme is the constant tussle in life between property and art, love and possession, freedom and convention. In the fine tradition of family sagas, these themes play themselves out over and over with each generation.

Hocherman's mixture of the yiddish folklore 'The Dybbuk' and the cinema clasic 'The Exorcist' combine to make a book that you just can't put down! It picks up from page one and captivates the reader until the very end of the book. It leaves you screaming for more. The book is enjoyable on many levels, specifically an intelectual level. The book isn't for those who want the book to think for them, and that is what makes it such a terrific read.

High Fidelity / Nick Hornby. - [ Londyn ] : "Indigo", [ 1996 ]. - 253 s. ; 20 cm.
Rob is a pop music junkie who runs his own semi-failing record store. His girlfriend, Laura, has just left him for the guy upstairs, and Rob is both miserable and relieved. After all, could he have spent his life with someone who has a bad record collection? Rob seeks refuge in the company of the offbeat clerks at his store, who endlessly review their top five films; top five Elvis Costello songs; top five episodes of Cheers. Rob tries dating a singer, but maybe it’s just that he’s always wanted to sleep with someone who has a record contract. Then he sees Laura again. And Rob begins to think that life with kids, marriage, barbecues, and soft rock CDs might not be so bad.

The Gun Seller / Hugh Laurie. - Londyn : Mandarin, 1997. - 339 s. ; 18 cm.
Hugh Laurie was so concerned that a publisher should genuinely fall in love with his book and not simply exploit it as yet another celebrity novel, that he got his agent to send the manuscript of THE GUN SELLER to Heinemann pseudonymously. It was only after Heinemann declared the book a comic classic that the agent revealed the true identity of the author. . . . . When Hugh Laurie was a teenager, he adored reading thrillers by authors like Alistair MacLean, THE GUN SELLER is an hilarious spoof if that tradition but wickedly updated for the Nineties.

In the hallucinatory light and heat of a Mediterranean island, a geologist arrives to inspect a granite quarry where a worker has been killed in suspicious circumstances. Briefed in advance to write a damning report, he brings along his young mistress and pushes his wife and family to the back of his mind. But his blithe plans are disrupted by the arrival of the dead man's widow, hell-bent on revenge; a fax from his wife announcing her pregnancy; and a threatening dispute with the quarry owners. Conflicting messages and complex motivations abound until, from the dust and roar of quarry and stone mill, the jagged contours of a harrowing conspiracy emerge. By the time the home office instructs him to drop the case, it is too late. He has already stumbled into a web of blackmail, deception, and murder.
