The British Empire : Sunrise to Sunset / Philippa Levine. - Edinburgh : Pearson Education Limited, cop. 2007. - X, [2], 252 s. : il. ; 23 cm.
Violent, powerful, vast: the British Empire is typically viewed as distant and tropical. By contrast, this book examines the effects of the empire on men, women and children across the globe: both those under imperial rule and those who implemented it. Looking beyond politics and diplomacy, Philippa Levine combines a traditional approach to colonial history with an investigation of the experience of living within the empire. Spanning the period from Cromwell’s rule to decolonization in the late twentieth century, and including an extensive chronology for ease of reference, Levine considers the impact of British rule for people in Africa, India and Australia, as well as for the English rulers, and for the Welsh, Scots and Irish who were subject to 'internal colonialism' under the English yoke. Imperialism often led to serious unrest; Levine examines the cruel side of imperialism’s purportedly 'civilizing' mission unflinchingly.

The Yorkists : the history of a dynasty / Anne Crawford. - London ; New York : Hambledon Continuum, 2007. - XX, 200, [8] s. : il. ; 24 cm.
The Yorkists were one of the two main contending parties in England's first great civil war, the Wars of the Roses. They have been immortalised by Shakespeare not only in his Richard III but also in his three parts of Henry VI. Anne Crawford examines the truth behind both the characters of these kings and behind the stories in the plays, including the death of the duke of Clarence by drowning in a butt of malmsey and the celebrated murder of his nephews, Edward V and Richard, Duke of York, by their uncle, Richard III.

"If ever a history book were a tract for the times, it is "The Isles: a History". "The Isles" is a masterwork, particulary memorable for its concluding survey of centrifugal forces in a late twentieth-century Britain where there are more Muslims tha Methodists. Precisely three years ago there appeared Davies's "Europe: a History". "The Isles" forms a fine companion: encyclopaedic, provocatively argued and enhanced by generous quotations from works of literature in all the Isles tongues. (Roy Porter, The Times)

The monarchy has remained important in British public life long after monarchs ceased, in the early nineteenth century, to govern as well as to reign, and popular legitimacy came to be founded on representation, not the immutability of a sacred hierarchy. This book addresses two fundamental questions about the British monarchy in the modern period. What has been its function in the political and social life of the nation? Why, for much but by no means all of the modern period, has it been so popular with its subjects? Leading historians offer contributions on the monarchy and public values, the monarchy's popularity, the monarchy and Ireland, the monarchy and film, gender and the monarchy, the royal court and republicanism, and the monarchy and the wider world. These essays shed considerable new light on the monarchy's place in British public life and on the broader social and political history of modern Britain.

England under the Norman and Angevin Kings 1075-1225 / Robert Bartlett. - Repr. - Oxford : Clarendon Press ; New York : Oxford University Press, 2011. - XXX, 772 s., [8] s. tabl. : il. ; 24 cm.
(The New Oxford History of England)
Bibliogr. s. 695-705. Indeksy.
This lively and far-reaching account of the politics, religion and culture of England in the century and a half after the Norman Conquest provides a vivid picture of everyday existence, and increases our understanding of all aspects of medieval society. This was a period in which the ruling dynasty and military aristocracy were deeply enmeshed with the politics and culture of France. Professor Bartlett describes their conflicts, and their preoccupations - the sense of honour, the role of violence, and the glitter of tournament, heraldry, and Arthurian romance. He explores the mechanics of government; assesses the role of the Church at a time of radical developments in religious life and organization; and investigates the peasant economy, the foundation of this society, and the growing urban and commercial activity. There are colourful details of the everyday life and ordinary men and women, with their views on the past, on sexuality, on animals, on death, the undead, and the occult. The result is a fascinating and comprehensive portrayal of a period which begins with conquest and ends in assimilation.

This is a unique account of the British Isles from pre-Roman times to the twentieth century, distinguished by its stress on the fact that English history forms only part of a wider "history of four nations." To ignore this wider dimension is to distort our view of the past and hinder our understanding of the present. Wide-ranging, the book transforms and challenges traditional accounts of what constitutes national history.

Słowo kluczowe: Great Britain history
A History of Modern Britain confronts head-on the victory of shopping over politics. It tells the story of how the great political visions of New Jerusalem or a second Elizabethan Age, rival idealisms, came to be defeated by a culture of consumerism, celebrity and self-gratification. In each decade, political leaders think they know what they are doing, but find themselves confounded. Every time, the British people turn out to be stroppier and harder to herd than predicted.

Plantagenet England : 1225-1360 / Michael Prestwich. - Oxford : Clarendon Press ; New York : Oxford University Press, 2010. - XXII, 638 s., [12] s. tabl. : ill. ; 25 cm.

Bibliogr. s. 587-608, indeks.
England of the Plantagenet kings was a turbulent place. In politics it saw Simon de Montfort's challenge to the crown in Henry III's reign and it witnessed the deposition of Edward II. By contrast, ans as relief, it also experienced the highly successful rules of Edward I and his grandson, Edward III. Political institutions were transformed with the development of parliament, and war, the stimulus for some of the change, was never far away. Wales was conquered and the Scottish Wars of Inpedendence started in Edward I's reign, while Crécy and Poitiers were English triumphs under Edward III. Beyond politics, the structure of English society was developing, from the great magnates at the top to the peasantry at the bottom. Economic changes were also significant, from the expansionary period of the thirteenth century to years of difficulty in the fourteenth, culminating in the greatest demographic disaster of historical times, the Black Death. Embracing politics and government, kingship, the structure of society, France, Scotland, and Wales, as welle as areas such as the environment, management of the land, and crime and punishment, Michael Prestwitch's magisterial survey casts the plantagenet past in a new and revealing light.

The Black Death, the Peasants' Revolt, the Hundred Years War, the Wars of the Roses... a succession of dramatic social and political upheavals reshaped England in the period 1360 to 1461. In his lucid and penetrating account of this formative period, Gerald Harriss draws on the research of the last thirty years to describe late medieval society at its peak. The political narrative centres on the rule and eventual deposition of Richard II on charges of tyranny and the establishment of the House of Lancaster, which was in turn overthrown in the Wars of the Roses. Abroad, Henry V's heroic victory at Agincourt in 1415 opened the way to the English conquest and colonisation of Normandy and a projected union of England and France. Far reaching chenges occured in English society. The Black Death produced a crisis in agrarian structures, marked by the Peasant's Revolt in 1381 and the end of serfdom. A class structure emerged in landed society, with grades of knights, esquires, gentlemen and yeomen linked to the nobility through patronage and service. The marked individualism of this society was accompanied by a growing sense of national identity. Literature expressed an assertive patriotism, facilitated by the spread of London english as a standard language, while a spate of church building developed perpendicular as a distinctive national style. the increasing participation of the laity in the Church stimulated new forms of Catholic devotion and prompted the emergence of the proto-Protestantism of John Wyclif and the Lollards. Through a close examination of these aspects of late medieval England, Gerald Harriss traces its transformation from a feudal into a national society.

This beautifully illustrated volume tells the story of Britain and its people over two thousand years, from the coming of the Roman legions to the present day. Encompassing political, social, economic, and cultural developments throughout the British Isles, the dramatic narrative is taken up in turn by ten leading historians who offer the fruits of the best modern scholarship to the general reader in an authoritative form, illuminating their text with carefully chosen pictures and maps. A vivid, sometimes surprising picture emerges of a continuous turmoil of change in every period, and the wider social context of political and economic tension is made clear. But consensus, no less than conflict, is a part of the story: in focusing on elements of continuity down the centuries, the authors bring out that special awareness of nationality and patriotism which has been such a distinctive feature of British society. By relating both these factors in the British experience, and by exploring the many ways in which Britain has shaped and been shaped by contact with Europe and the wider world, this comprehensive work brings the reader face to face with the past, and the foundations of modern British society.

This is a much-revised version of Professor Cottret's acclaimed study of the Huguenot communities in England, first published in French by Aubier in 1985. "The Huguenots in England" presents a detailed, sympathetic assessment of one of the great migrations of early modern Europe, examining the social origins, aspirations and eventual destiny of the refugees, and their responses to their new-found home, a Protestant terre d'exil. Bernard Cottret shows how for the poor weavers, carders and craftsmen who constituted the majority of the exiles the experience of religious persecution was at once personal calamity, disruptive of home and family, and heaven-sent economic opportunity, which many were quick to exploit. The individual testimonies contained in consistory registers contain a wealth of personal narrative, reflection and reaction, enabling Professor Cottret to build a fully rounded picture of the Huguenot experience in early modern England. In an extended afterword Professor Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie considers the Huguenot phenomenon in the wider context of the contrasting British and French attitudes to religious minorities in the early modern period.

The nineetenth century was a period of striking developments, and subject to a great pressure of change. This process of change is the primary focus of the book. Organised into a series of thematic chapters, Black and MacRaild's wide-ranging text offers the reader an analysis of numerous spheres of human history: politics, empire and warfare; economy, society and population; religion and culture. The book also offers considered treatment of Scotland, Wales and Ireland, with a truly British (as opposed to English) perspective maintained throughout. With numerous illustrations, helpful explanatory tables, boxes and textual inserts, as well as a list of further reading with each chapter, "Ninteetenth Century Britain" is an excellent introductory text book for students of this most vital period in British history.
