Rhetoric in Popular Culture / Barry Brummett. - Ed. 2. - Thousand Oaks, London : SAGE Publications, cop. 2006. - XIII, [1], 309 s. : il. ; 23 cm.
Tekst w j. angielskim
This book joins together two vital scholarly traditions: rhetorical criticism and critical studies. With updated examples from popular culture throughout the text; updated material on Marxist, psychoanalytic, feminist, media-centered, and culture-centered criticism; as well as a new discussion on "super-signs", neo-Aristotelian methods, and intertextuality, the text enables students to apply the growing and cutting-edge methodologies of critical studies to the study of rhetoric, and to link those new approaches to the rhetorical tradition.

Reading the popular / John Fiske. - London, New York : Routledge, 2007. - XI, 228 s. ; 22 cm.
'...well-written and accessible. Making the difficult seem easy is Fiske's great talent. No introductory reading list in the field would be complete without a Fiske' - Sociology In Reading the Popular, John Fiske analyzes popular "texts" to reveal both their explicit, implicit (and often opposite) meanings and uses, and the social and political dynamics they reflect. He examines the multitude of meanings lying beneath the cultural artifacts that surround us in shopping malls, popular music and television.

The main goal of this thesis is to analyse the linguistic picture of popular culture in the written works by the most prominent representative of pop art Andy Warhol. The reconstruction of the linguistic picture of the world of Warhol's written works has as a basis the metaphor POP IS RELIGION. The associations of Warhol's vision of the world with the folk picture of the world, magic and the Byzantine Iconostasis are of special interest for this research.

Understanding popular culture / John Fiske. - Ed.1, 2 im. - London, New York : Routledge, 1995. - XI, 206 s. : il. ; 22 cm.
What is popular culture? How does it differ from mass culture? What do popular texts reveal about class, race, and gender dynamics in a society? This book takes a new approach to the study of such cultural artifacts as jeans, tabloid newspapers and TV game shows. Fiske differentiates between mass culture - the cultural products put out by an industrialized, capitalist society, and popular culture - the ways in which people use, abuse, and subvert these products to create their own meanings and message. Companion volume to Reading the Popular, this book presents a radically different theory of what it means for culture to be popular: that is, literally, of the people.

Popular music and society / Brian Longhurst. - Cambridge : Polity Press, 1996. - XVI, 277 s. : il. ; 23 cm.
This book provides an up-to-date introduction to the study of popular music. It is written in the belief that the analysis of popular music needs to be informed by wider debates in sociology and cultural studies. The book examines the ways in which popular music is produced, structured as text, and understood and used by audiences. It includes overviews and critiques of general theories, outlines of the most important empirical studies, and data on the contemporary production and consumption of popular music. Drawing on the theories of Adorno and Weber, Longhurst examines the contemporary organization of the music industry, the social production of music, and the effects of technological change on production. The history and politics of popular music are discussed, as are the connections of popular music and sexuality. Issues such as authenticity, stemming from the debates around black music, are addressed, and several different ways of studying the text of popular music are reviewed. The literature on sub culture and music is looked at in the context of an examination of the audience for pop music. Developing work on fans is considered, as are contemporary approaches which problematize relationships of production and consumption. Clearly written and well illustrated, popular music and society will be and excellent textbook for students in the sociology of culture, cultural studies, and media am d communication studies.

American popular culture is everywhere. All over the world, kids wear Levis, radios blare rap songs, television stations broadcast American programs, and Hollywood movies draw huge audiences. Does this massive "Americanization" of the globe represent some sinister form of cultural imperialism? Alternatively, do audiences and consumers in the importing countries accept American movies, music, and television programs because they match local trends and desires? Do receiving communities transform these products to fit their own needs, to the point where they are no longer "American" but in fact have become indigenous? And who is in charge of all of this, anyway? Is it Wall Street, Madison Avenue, the Pentagon, the CIA, or Hollywood? Is it, at least partly, local economic and political elites in the receiving countries? Or is it simply "the people," nationalities be damned? These are the questions at the heart of the essays collected in "Here, There and Everywhere." Essays by 23 authors from 14 countries cover topics from Japan to Spain, Nigeria to Russia, and from West Germany to East Germany (a distance that seemed to be further than travelling to the moon, yet was covered by rock 'n' roll most easily, despite the wall). In five sections, they examine the historical background, the impact of Hollywood, the power of American popular music from jazz to rock 'n' roll and rap, and the popularity of as well as resistance to American popular culture in particular countries.

Popular culture is a central part of everyday life to many Americans. Personalities such as Elvis Presley, Oprah Winfrey, and Michael Jordan are more recognizable to many people than are most elected officials. With Amusement for All is the first comprehensive history of two centuries of mass entertainment in the United States, covering everything from the penny press to Playboy, the NBA to NASCAR, big band to hip hop, and other topics including film, comics, television, sports, dance, and music. Paying careful attention to matters of race, gender, class, technology, economics, and politics, LeRoy Ashby emphasizes the complex ways in which popular culture simultaneously reflects and transforms American culture, revealing that the world of entertainment constantly evolves as it tries to meet the demands of a diverse audience.

Bibliogr. przy pracach.
The essays cover aspects of British politics, media, music, film and popular culture at the close of the XX century. They indicate that the Labour Party's concept of "New" Britain introduced for political marketing is justified by significant qualitative transformations of British culture. In their critical interpretations the authors apply key theories and methods of the field to empirical material and demonstrate the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to cultural analysis.

(Contemporary Worlds)
In "Britain since the Seventies", well-known historian Jeremy Black examines the most recent developments in British political, social, cultural and economic history. Taking the triumph of consumerism as an organizing theme, he charts the rise and fall of the Conservative Party, developments in British society, culture and politics, environmental issues, questions of identity, and changes in economic circumstance and direction. Iconic issues such as BSE, transport, asylum seekers and the NHS are viewed from both national and international perspectives. Black's account of contemporary Britain challenges as well as entertains, seeking to engage the reader in the process of interpretation. Through the lens of the last three decades, the author unveils his image of a country in which uncertainty, contingency and change are the defining features. In charting the impact of increasing individualism, longevity and secularization, Black is drawn repeatedly to examine a fundamental paradox of modern Britain: 'At the start of both century and millennium, the British were more prosperous than ever before, but ...happiness has not risen with prosperity.'" Britain since the Seventies" is a wide-ranging and cogent evaluation of recent British history, and as such will appeal to all those interested in the condition of modern Britain, and how it came to be so, as well as being an ideal introduction for students of the subject.
