Understanding intercultural communication / Stella Ting-Toomey, Leeva C. Chung. - 2nd edition - New York ; Oxford : Oxford University Press, 2012, 2005. - XXVI, 326 p. : illustrations ; 24 cm.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 267-296) and indexes.
Written in a conversational style, this book introduces students to the foundations of intercultural communication, a vibrant discipline within the field. Authors Stella Ting-Toomey and Leeva Chung take a multicontextual, inclusive approach that balances international and intercultural communication issues against U.S. domestic diversity issues. In addition to emphasizing a value-oriented perspective on intercultural encounters, the text contains a robust ethical chapter, complete with specific guidelines that will help students become ethical intercultural communicators. By integrating current empirical research with lively intercultural examples, the authors ask thought-provoking questions and pose ethical dilemmas for students to ponder. The text offers a sprawling treatment of such topics as ethnic and cultural identity change, culture shock and intercultural adjustment, romantic relationships and raising bicultural children, global identity challenges, and decision-making choices in intercultural ethics.

Language and linguistics : an introduction / John Lyons. - Cambridge [Cambridgeshire] ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2009. - XI, 356 pages : illustrations ; 22 cm.
Includes index.
Bibliography: pages [333]-350.
This 1981 book is a general introduction to linguistics and the study of language, intended particularly for beginning students and readers with no previous knowledge or training in the subject. There is first a general account of the nature of language and of the aims, methods and basic principles of linguistic theory. John Lyons then introduces in turn each of the main sub-fields of linguistics: the sounds of language, grammar, semantics, language change, psycholinguistics: the sounds of language, grammar, semantics, language change, psycholinguistics, language and culture. Throughout the book he emphasizes particularly those aspects of the discipline that seem fundamental and most likely to remain important. He stresses throughout the cultural at least as much as the biological context of human language, and shows how the linguist's concerns connect productively with those of the traditional humanities and the social sciences. Each chapter has a wide-ranging set of discussion questions and revision exercises, and extensive suggestions for further reading. The exposition is marked throughout by the author's characteristic clarity, balance and authority.

An understanding of sociocultural context is crucial in second language learning yet developing this awareness often poses a real challenge to the typical language learner. This book is a practical language teachers' guide that focuses on how to teach socially and culturally appropriate language for effective communication. Moving beyond a purely theoretical approach to pragmatics, the volume offers practical advice to teachers, with hands-on classroom tasks included in every chapter. Readers will be able to: * Identify possible causes of learner errors and choices in cross-cultural communication * Understand second language acquisition theories that support their classroom practices * Develop a pragmatics-focused instructional component, classroom-based assessments, and curricula * Help learners to become more strategic about their learning and performance of speech acts * Incorporate technology into their approach to teaching pragmatics This book aims to close the gap between what research in pragmatics has found and how language is generally taught today. It will be of interest to all language teachers, graduate students in language teaching and linguistics, teacher educators, and developers of materials for teaching language.
