A large and growing number of students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in the US and around the world have the potential to develop bilingualism and biliteracy if supported in their immediate environment. At the forefront in focusing exclusively on biliteracy development in early childhood across a variety of languages, this book provides both findings from empirical research with young bilinguals in home and school contexts and practical applications of these findings. Each chapter is structured in a similar format to offer parallel descriptions of the research, including a brief review of related empirical studies, an overview of the methods for data collection and analysis, a description of the main findings, and specific pedagogical implications to support educators efforts to construct meaningful, challenging, and dynamic literacy and language learning communities where one or more languages are used for communicating and learning.

(The Best of Language Learning / ed. Alister H. Cumming)
The nine major empirical studies of "Lexical Issues in Language Learning" address key issues in the development and use of vocabulary by child bilinguals and older second language learners. The thematic focus in this collection of Language Learning articles is on the assessment of lexical development in bilinguals at different points in the lifespan; the psycholinguistic factors that determine the learnability of second language lexis; and the conditions on communication tasks that promote the learning and retention of second language vocabulary or lead to different strategies for handling lexical problems. The introductory chapter presents an overview of current trends in lexical research in second language learning, and assesses the contribution of each of the nine studies to knowledge in the field. The chapters are organized in three sections in accordance with the main themes of the volume. The preface to each individual article contains a brief update assessing the contribution of the research in question to the current knowledge about second language lexical acquisition. The studies address learning in diverse situations internationally, utitlize innovative research methods conducted with the highest levels of expertise, and concern acquisition in various languages: Chinese, English, French, German, and Spanish. The volume is not only a valuable reference tool for researchers and scholars active in this field, but also form excellent course material for use in graduate seminars on the subject.

(Second Language Acquisition Research Series)
Bibliografia.
Language fundamentally defines and distinguishes us as humans, as members of society, and as individuals. As we go through life, our relationship with language and with learning shifts and changes, but it remains significant. This book is an up-to-date resource for graduate students and researchers in second language (L2) acquisition who are interested in language learning across the lifespan. The main goal is to survey and evaluate what is known about the linguistic-cognition-affect associations that occur in L2 learning from birth through senescence (passing through the stages of childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and third age), the extent to which L2 acquisition may be seen as contributing to healthy and active aging, the impact of the development of personalized, technology-enhanced communicative L2 environments, and how these phenomena are to be approached scientifically and methodologically. The effects of certain specific variables, such as gender, socio-economic background, and bilingualism are also analyzed, as we argue that chronological age does not determine the positioning of L2 learners across the lifespan: age is part of a complex web of social distinctions such as psychological and individual factors that intersect in the construction of a learner's relative status and opportunities.

Summarizing current research and weaving it into practical instructional strategies that teachers can immediately use with young English language learners (ELLs), this book addresses a major priority for today's primary-grade classrooms. All aspects of effective instruction for ELLs are explored: oral language development and instruction, materials, word study, vocabulary, comprehension, writing, and home-school connections. Assessment is discussed throughout, and is also covered in a separate chapter. The volume is packed with realistic examples, lesson planning ideas, book lists, online resources, and reproducibles. Discussion and reflection questions enhance its utility as a professional development tool or course text.

Providing practical guidance and resources, this book helps teachers harness the power of children's literature for developing ELLs' literacy skills and language proficiency. The authors show how carefully selected fiction, nonfiction, and poetry can support students' learning across the curriculum. Criteria and guiding questions are presented for matching books and readers based on text features, literacy and language proficiency, and student background knowledge and interests. Interspersed throughout are essays and poems by well-known children's authors that connect in a personal way with the themes explored in the chapters

(Task-based language teaching.)
Includes bibliographical references (pages 175-188) and index.
The book examines how task-based language teaching (TBLT) can be carried out with young beginner learners in a foreign language context. It addresses how TBLT can be introduced and implemented in a difficult instructional context where traditional teaching approaches are entrenched. The book reports a study that examined how TBLT can be made to work in such a context. The study compares the effectiveness of TBLT and the traditional “present-practice-produce” (PPP) approach for teaching English to young beginner learners in Japan. The TBLT researched in this study is unique as it employed input-based tasks rather than oral production tasks. The study shows that such tasks constitute an ideal means of inducting beginner learners into listening and processing English. It also shows that such tasks lead naturally to the learners trying to use the L2 in communication. It provides evidence to support the claim that TBLT promotes the kind of naturalistic interaction which is beneficial for the development of both interactional and linguistic competence. The book concludes with suggestions for how to implement TBLT in Japanese school contexts.

This indispensable book presents an accessible, research-driven approach to making content meaningful for English language learners. It enables teachers to put together a differentiated lesson on the run or dig further into proven teaching and learning strategies for non-native speakers. Keep this book on your desk and the sticky notes handy—you'll be marking page after page of useful, effective, and enjoyable additions to your teaching repertoire!—Kristine B. Heim, MA, ELL Teacher, Saint Paul (Minnesota) Public Schools “Standards based, practical, and flexible, this book provides tools for helping ELLs grow in critical areas of literacy. Teachers are guided to select exactly which lessons are most appropriate for the needs of their students and to determine the level of instruction: beginning, intermediate, or advanced. The 'Tech It Out' sections and many website links show how to take learning to the next level in a modern way. Teachers finally have a way to differentiate literacy skills so ELLs can actively participate with their peers. This is a 'must-have' book for every classroom teacher trying to help ELLs succeed!
