Social change in contemporary Britain / Nicholas Abercrombie, Alan Warde. - Edition 1, reprint. - Cambridge : Polity Press, 1995. - XI, 189 stron : ilustracje ; 23 cm.
This book is a lively and up-to-date account of the major developments in British society over the last 25 years. It is an excellent teaching text and an ideal companion volume to the highly successful textbook Contemporary British Society. Consisting of nine essays by leading sociologists, Social Change in Contemporary Britain examines some of the most important changes which have occurred during the lifetime of most students today. Areas which are discussed include: the decline of manufacturing industry; changes in higher education and the effects these have had on womens' employment opportunities; the development of pop music over the past 25 years. The volume also includes chapters on the changing sexual division of labour; Thatcherism and post-Fordism; changes in household structure and dynamics; new religious movements, and crime and policing from the 1960s to the 1980s.

Contemporary British Society / Nicholas Ambercrombie, Alan Warde [i in.]. - 3rd ed. - Malden : Polity Press, cop. 2010. - XX, [2], 602 s. : il. ; 25 cm.
Bibliogr. s. 559-575. Indeks.
The third edition of the highly–acclaimed "Contemporary British Society" is the only textbook to provide comprehensive coverage of all aspects of the social structure of modern Britain. Completely revised and updated, this new edition employs the very latest statistical information and empirical studies, and examines all the new arguments and debates concerning modern British society. Separate chapters explore the major areas of modern life in Britain – economic organization, employment, patterns of inequality, class, gender, ethnicity, family and households, education, health, media, deviance and politics. New to this edition are chapters on globalization, associations, and leisure. The emphasis throughout the book is on an accessible, user–friendly, and non–technical approach. It is written in a jargon–free and approachable style; there is extensive cross–referencing and frequent and clear summarizing of arguments; and numerous photographs, diagrams, graphs, drawings and cartoons complement and illuminate the text. "Contemporary British Society" is written for students of introductory sociology whether they are taking ′A′ level or are in the first year of an undergraduate course in a higher education institution. It will also be useful for those taking courses in other subjects, such as social policy, health and town planning, which demand knowledge of particular aspects of British society.

Sociology for nurses / edited by Elaine Denny, Sarah Earle, Alistair Hewison. - Third edition. - Cambridge: Polity Press, 2016 - XVI, 364 pages; 23 cm.
Includes bibliographical references and index.
Sociology for Nurses has become a leading textbook and an invaluable companion for students wishing to get to grips with how sociology can positively transform professional nursing practice. This thoroughly revised new edition maintains its commitment to providing jargon-free explanations of sociological theories and evidence to show how studying sociology can be useful in all branches of nursing. Readers will develop a clear understanding of what sociology is and why it is essential to practice, gain deeper awareness of social issues such as gender, ethnicity, class and the life course, and become more familiar with the social contexts of health policy and nursing as a profession. With updates in every chapter, the third edition includes a new chapter on research methods, a reorganized collection of chapters on health policy, extended coverage of long-term illness and disability, as well as contemporary case studies on topical healthcare issues such as dementia, the obesity epidemic and recent attempts to integrate health and social care. In addition, the book provides clearly defined learning aims, a useful glossary of sociological concepts, structured activities and questions for discussion, and annotated suggestions for further reading. The editors and contributing authors to the book have a wealth of experience teaching sociology to nurses at diploma and degree pre-registration and post-registration levels. Their book will continue to spark interest and debate among all student nurses, particularly those approaching sociology for the first time.

Popular music and society / Brian Longhurst. - Cambridge : Polity Press, 1996. - XVI, 277 s. : il. ; 23 cm.
This book provides an up-to-date introduction to the study of popular music. It is written in the belief that the analysis of popular music needs to be informed by wider debates in sociology and cultural studies. The book examines the ways in which popular music is produced, structured as text, and understood and used by audiences. It includes overviews and critiques of general theories, outlines of the most important empirical studies, and data on the contemporary production and consumption of popular music. Drawing on the theories of Adorno and Weber, Longhurst examines the contemporary organization of the music industry, the social production of music, and the effects of technological change on production. The history and politics of popular music are discussed, as are the connections of popular music and sexuality. Issues such as authenticity, stemming from the debates around black music, are addressed, and several different ways of studying the text of popular music are reviewed. The literature on sub culture and music is looked at in the context of an examination of the audience for pop music. Developing work on fans is considered, as are contemporary approaches which problematize relationships of production and consumption. Clearly written and well illustrated, popular music and society will be and excellent textbook for students in the sociology of culture, cultural studies, and media am d communication studies.

This book is written at a level accessible to everyone and concentrates upon gaining the interest of the reader. The author, a sociologist of international repute, has brought his experience to bear upon producing an innovative text. All the conventional areas of sociology are covered, but the author gives special attention to the new developments in the subject which have occurred during the late 1970s and 1980s. Notable features of the book are a stress upon the recovery of a historical perspective in sociology, emphasis upon the significance of global developments in social life, and systematic discussion of areas of analysis usually absent from textbooks in the subject, such as military power and war, or communications and the mass media. The book also strongly emphasizes a comparative perspective. `Sociology' is thoroughly up-to-date in terms of exhaustive references to current empirical materials. It is suitable for all A level students, first-year college FE students and undergraduates looking for an accessible, well-researched and up-to-date text, written with style and flair.
