Villette / Charlotte Brontë. - Londyn : Penguin, 1994. - 507 stron ; 18 cm.
With her final novel, "Villette", Charlotte Bronte reached the height of her artistic power. First published in 1853, Villette is Bronte's most accomplished and deeply felt work, eclipsing even Jane Eyre in critical acclaim. Her narrator, the autobiographical Lucy Snowe, flees England and a tragic past to become an instructor in a French boarding school in the town of Villette. There, she unexpectedly confronts her feelings of love and longing as she witnesses the fitful romance between Dr. John, a handsome young Englishman, and Ginerva Fanshawe, a beautiful coquetter. This first pain brings others, and with them comes the heartache Lucy has tried so long to escape. Yet in spite of adversity and disappointment, Lucy Snowe survives to recount the unstinting vision of a turbulent life's journey—a journey that is one of the most insightful fictional studies of a woman's consciousness in English literature.

Charles Dickens' comic masterpiece about which his biographer, Forster, noted that it marked a crucial phase in the author's development as he began to delve deeper into the 'springs of character'. Old Martin Chuzzlewit, tormented by the greed and selfishness of his family, effectively drives his grandson, young Martin, to undertake a voyage to America. It is a voyage which will have crucial consequences not only for young Martin, but also for his grandfather and his grandfather's servant, Mary Graham with whom young Martin is in love. The commercial swindle of the Anglo-Bengalee company and the fraudulent Eden Land Corporation have a topicality in our own time. This strong sub-plot shows evidence of Dickens' mastery of crime where characters such as the criminal Jonas Chuzzlewit, the old nurse Mrs Gamp, and the arch-hypocrite Seth Pecksniff are the equal to any in his other great novels. Generations of readers have also delighted in Dickens' wonderful description of the London boarding-house - 'Todgers'.

The Illustrated Brontës of Haworth is a celebration of the lives of one of the most famous families in English literature, Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë, who lived in Haworth in Yorkshire during the first half of the nineteenth century. Brian Wilks has made a skillful selection from the prose and poetry of all the sisters to give a vivid picture of their lives. Their writings closely reflect the sisters' own experiences: for example, we see how Charlotte transformed her own ordeal at Cowan Bridge School into her account of Lowood in Jane Eyre, and how Emily used the dramatic moorland landscape around Haworth to provide the symbolically charged backdrop to the powerful emotions at play in Wuthering Heights. For those new to the Brontës this book is a fascinating introduction to the family and their writings, and Bronte lovers will find all their favorite pieces are included, with a fascinating commentary which sets the works in context. Beautifully illustrated with paintings, drawings and memorabilia of Haworth and photographs of the surrounding landscape. The Illustrated Brontës of Haworth is a superb collection of some of the most memorable prose in English language.

David Copperfield / Charles Dickens. - Londyn : Penguin, [1994]. - 716 s. ; 18 cm.
(Penguin Popular Classics)
"David Copperfield" is the story of a young man’s adventures on his journey from an unhappy and impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist. Among the gloriously vivid cast of characters he encounters are his tyrannical stepfather, Mr Murdstone; his brilliant, but ultimately unworthy school-friend Steerforth; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; his nemesis, the eternally humble Uriah Heep; frivolous, enchanting Dora; and the magnificently impecunious Micawber, one of literature’s great comic creations. In David Copperfield – the novel he described as his ‘favourite child’ – Dickens drew revealingly on his own experiences to create one of his most exuberant and enduringly popular works, filled with tragedy and comedy in equal measure.

Great Expectations / Charles Dickens. - Hertfordshire : Wordsworth, 2000. - XVII, 410 s. ; 20 cm.
(Wordsworth Classics)
Considered by many to be Dickens' finest novel, "Great Expectations" traces the growth of the book's narrator, Philip Pirrip (Pip), from a boy of shallow dreams to a man with depth of character. From its famous dramatic opening on the bleak Kentish marshes, the story abounds with some of Dickens' most memorable characters. Among them are the kindly blacksmith Joe Gargery, the mysterious convict Abel Magwitch, the eccentric Miss Haversham and her beautiful ward Estella, Pip's good-hearted room-mate Herbert Pocket and the pompous Pumblechook. As Pip unravels the truth behind his own 'great expectations' in his quest to become a gentleman, the mysteries of the past and the convolutions of fate through a series of thrilling adventures serve to steer him towards maturity and his most important discovery of all - the truth about himself.

(The World's Classics)
"Wuthering Heights", first published in 1847, the year before the author's death at the age of thirty, endures today as perhaps the most powerful and intensely original novel in the English language. The epic story of Catherine and Heathcliff plays out against the dramatic backdrop of the wild English moors, and presents an astonishing metaphysical vision of fate and obsession, passion and revenge.
