The religious characters that are at the centre of these stories are really devices above all: although they are real, fleshed out men, they function almost as invisible narrators, allowing the reader to wander at leisure over a cast of other characters, where the 'real' action is going on. Thus, for example, the tale "Mr Gilfil's Love Story", while superficially being the story of the one great love of the Reverend Gilfil's life, really belongs to the girl he loved: it's her story. Likewise the Reverend Tryan is ostensibly the centre of "Janet's Repentance", but in fact the story is a beautiful portrait of a female-dominated community, with at its centre, an incredibly moving and powerful tale of an abusive marriage and a wife who finds her salvation in doing good. It is fundamentally a Christian book: but it's much more than just a book about Christians, which is why this book is still in print and hasn't faded into insignificance.

Forsyte makes a solid, well researched case for his ending to the "Mystery of Edwin Drood", based on Dickens' comments to contemporaries, original illustrations, and other works with which Dickens would have been familiar and by which he was likely to have been influenced. The second half of the book is a plausible pastiche based on his conclusions. Truly enjoyable and believable.

"The Well at the World's End" is a high fantasy novel by the British artist, poet, and author William Morris. It was first published in 1896 and has been reprinted a number of times since, most notably in two parts as the 20th and 21st volumes of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series, in August and September 1970. Nonetheless convinced that he is still a human, Simon is confined to the emergency psychiatric ward of Charing Cross Hospital, where he becomes the patient of Dr. Zack Busner, clinical psychologist, medical doctor, anti-psychiatrist, and former television personality -- an expert at the height of his reign as alpha male. As Busner attempts to convince him that 'everyone who is fully sentient in this world are chimpanzees, ' Simon struggles with the horrifying delusion that he is really a human trapped in a chimp's body.
