Lord Jim / Joseph Conrad. - Londyn : Penguin, [1994]. - 312, [1] s. ; 18 cm.
(Penguin Popular Classics)
When "Lord Jim" first appeared in 1900, many took Joseph Conrad to task for couching an entire novel in the form of an extended conversation--a ripping good yarn, if you like. Conrad defended his method, insisting that people really do talk for that long, and listen as well. In fact his chatty masterwork requires no defense--it offers up not only linguistic pleasures but a timeless exploration of morality.

The religious characters that are at the centre of these stories are really devices above all: although they are real, fleshed out men, they function almost as invisible narrators, allowing the reader to wander at leisure over a cast of other characters, where the 'real' action is going on. Thus, for example, the tale "Mr Gilfil's Love Story", while superficially being the story of the one great love of the Reverend Gilfil's life, really belongs to the girl he loved: it's her story. Likewise the Reverend Tryan is ostensibly the centre of "Janet's Repentance", but in fact the story is a beautiful portrait of a female-dominated community, with at its centre, an incredibly moving and powerful tale of an abusive marriage and a wife who finds her salvation in doing good. It is fundamentally a Christian book: but it's much more than just a book about Christians, which is why this book is still in print and hasn't faded into insignificance.

Forsyte makes a solid, well researched case for his ending to the "Mystery of Edwin Drood", based on Dickens' comments to contemporaries, original illustrations, and other works with which Dickens would have been familiar and by which he was likely to have been influenced. The second half of the book is a plausible pastiche based on his conclusions. Truly enjoyable and believable.

In this, his first novel, William Golding gave the traditional adventure story an ironic, devastating twist. The boys' delicate sense of order fades, and their childish fears are transformed into something deeper and more primitive. Their games take on a horrible significance, and before long the well-behaved party of schoolboys has turned into a tribe of faceless, murderous savages.

The Woodlanders / Thomas Hardy. - Londyn : Penguin, 1994. - 443 stron ; 18 cm.
Passion and money, beauty and ambition, these are the opening themes in "The Woodlanders", a novel revolving around a small village community coming to terms with a radically changing world. Plain Marty South, a young country girl mature beyond her years, endures her love for Giles Winterbourne in silence. He works in partnership with George Melbury, the local timber-merchant and chief man of business in the area. Giles has deep unspoken feelings for Mr Melbury's daughter Grace who has been away at boarding school and now returns to Little Hintock an educated young woman with modern ideas. Giles belongs to a past she no longer wants to be a part of and she is soon attracted to the new, handsome young doctor in the village, Edred Fitzpiers. As they all follow their lonely course, their lives become inextricably intertwined.

Lady Chatterley's Lover / David Herbert Lawrence. - Middlesex : Penguin, [b.r.]. - 317 stron ; 18 cm.
"Lady Chatterley's Lover" is a bold exploration of illicit carnal love between a member of the gentry and her servant. Banned as obscene on publication in 1928, its notoriety - and readership - soared when it was finally published in full in 1960. The daring novel, describing the intense affair between the sexually frustrated Connie and Mellors, the family game-keeper, is widely regarded as D. H. Lawrence's most famous work. It remains an utterly compelling and thrilling read today.

In Moscow, a sheaf of military secrets changes hands. If it arrives at its destination, and if its import is understood, the consequences could be cataclysmic. Along the way it has an explosive impact on the lives of three people: a Soviet physicist burdened with secrets; a beautiful young Russian woman to whom the papers are entrusted; and Barley Blair, a bewildered English publisher pressed into service by British Intelligence to ferret out the document's source. A magnificent story of love, betrayal, and courage, The Russia House catches history in the act. For as the Iron Curtain begins to rust and crumble, Blair is left to sound a battle cry that may fall on deaf ears.

"The Well at the World's End" is a high fantasy novel by the British artist, poet, and author William Morris. It was first published in 1896 and has been reprinted a number of times since, most notably in two parts as the 20th and 21st volumes of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series, in August and September 1970. It is also available in one volume along with a similar Morris tale, The Wood Beyond the World (1894), in On the Lines of Morris' Romances: Two Books that Inspired J. R. R. Tolkien. Plot summary[edit] Using language with elements of the medieval tales which were his models, Morris tells the story of Peter, King of Upmeads, and his four sons, Blaise, Hugh, Gregory, and Ralph.

A very interesting insight into the American way of life from two very different perspectives, the simple life of the pueblo Indians and the brash, consumerism money based culture of oil rich Houston. Some people lose their sense of proportion, others their sense of scale, but Simon Dykes, a middle-aged, successful London painter, has lost his sense of perspective in a most disturbing fashion. After a night of routine, pedestrian dabauchery, traipsing from toilet to toilet, and imbibing a host of narcotics on the way, Simon wakes up cuddled in his girlfriend's loving arms. Much to his dismay, however, his girlfriend has turned into a chimpanzee. To add insult to injury, the psychiatric crash team sent to deal with him as he flips his lid is also comprised of chimps. Indeed, the entire city is overrun by clever primates, who, when they are not jostling for position, grooming themselves, or mating some of the females, can be found driving Volvos, hanging out on street corners, and running the world. Nonetheless convinced that he is still a human, Simon is confined to the emergency psychiatric ward of Charing Cross Hospital, where he becomes the patient of Dr. Zack Busner, clinical psychologist, medical doctor, anti-psychiatrist, and former television personality -- an expert at the height of his reign as alpha male. As Busner attempts to convince him that 'everyone who is fully sentient in this world are chimpanzees, ' Simon struggles with the horrifying delusion that he is really a human trapped in a chimp's body.
