The Illustrated Brontës of Haworth is a celebration of the lives of one of the most famous families in English literature, Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë, who lived in Haworth in Yorkshire during the first half of the nineteenth century. Brian Wilks has made a skillful selection from the prose and poetry of all the sisters to give a vivid picture of their lives. Their writings closely reflect the sisters' own experiences: for example, we see how Charlotte transformed her own ordeal at Cowan Bridge School into her account of Lowood in Jane Eyre, and how Emily used the dramatic moorland landscape around Haworth to provide the symbolically charged backdrop to the powerful emotions at play in Wuthering Heights. For those new to the Brontës this book is a fascinating introduction to the family and their writings, and Bronte lovers will find all their favorite pieces are included, with a fascinating commentary which sets the works in context. Beautifully illustrated with paintings, drawings and memorabilia of Haworth and photographs of the surrounding landscape. The Illustrated Brontës of Haworth is a superb collection of some of the most memorable prose in English language.
